Message from Howard Dyck

Dear friends,

The 2009-2010 season will be the 88th for the Grand Philharmonic Choir, and it will be my 38th and final season at the helm of this illustrious organization. The GPC has been at the very heart of my professional career, and while I will be handing the reins to another artistic director, I have every intention of maintaining a close and happy relationship with this choir which has developed into one of Canada’s leading choral organizations.

I am thrilled to tell you that my final season will be one of the very best! The four Main choir concerts, plus two Chamber choir concerts, will offer a rich blend of traditional masterworks (Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Verdi’s Requiem), as well as new repertoire by Canadian composers and a work which has long been one of my favourites, Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.

Over the years, I have taken special pride in the stellar soloists we have featured on our series. This year will be no exception. You will be thrilled by internationally-acclaimed singers like Ben Heppner, Suzie LeBlanc, Russell Braun, James Westman, and Susan Platts.

The choir itself, having grown into a potent choral force, continues to move from strength to strength. I take enormous pride in what these dedicated choral musicians have been able to accomplish. Join us this season for what will be the icing on the cake of my 38 happy and rewarding years of choral music-making!
